PFAS chemicals are highly toxic and carcinogenic chemicals. When humans ingest PFAS chemicals, the chemicals are absorbed and distributed throughout the body. The toxic chemicals remain and persist in the body for long periods of time, accumulating over time and causing long-term damage to the body’s organs. Exposure to PFAS chemicals cause many diseases including:
- Kidney cancer,
- Testicular cancer,
- Liver cancer,
- Pancreatic cancer,
- Prostate cancer,
- Bladder cancer,
- Ulcerative colitis,
- Thyroid disease, and
- Other medical conditions.
Since the 1970s, 3M has known that PFAS chemicals accumulate in the human body and are potentially toxic to human health. But 3M did nothing to limit the release of these chemicals into the environment in Decatur. Instead, 3M told the public that PFAS were not a threat to human health or the environment. Toray and Daikin also knew of the risks for years but continued to release PFAS into the environment anyway.
The EPA has determined maximum contamination levels for PFAS. 3M has known for decades that PFAS chemicals are hazardous and can accumulate in water supplies. PFAS chemicals are not removed from water supplies through conventional water filtration and purification methods.
Tests in recent years have shown high levels of PFAS chemicals in North Alabama water supplies. For example, West Morgan-East Lawrence Water Authority has found its water to have PFAS chemicals dozens of times higher than the safe levels proposed by the EPA.
The Plaintiffs in this lawsuit lived in North Alabama for decades, unknowingly drinking water that contained extremely high levels of PFAS chemicals that originated from the Defendants’ plants in Decatur.
When asked for a comment, Attorney Hunter Garnett stated: “I grew up drinking water from West Morgan-East Lawrence Water Authority. I played little league baseball with Terry Cowart’s son for years. Mr. Cowart was one of the father’s who assisted with our little league practices. I’m honored to be representing folks from my community who were negatively affected by the conduct of these Defendants.”

I am here in Montgomery , Alabama near Maxwell . My mother passed away in 2020 from pancreatic cancer as did my grandmother before her . However there was no genetic propensity. She also suffered from hypothyroidism. Could PFAS be the culprit
My brother was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer that spread into his bones in 2014 and he passed away in 2019. He lived in Athens Alabama and worked in Decatur Alabama. I am not sure if he actually worked at the 3M plant; however, his cancer came on suddenly and more than likely came from the contamination of the water. Also, my mom also previously lived in Alabama for 19 years in Summerville Alabama and worked at Bulkmatic Transport in Decatur Alabama for 19 years and she has had stomach issues for many years. Please let me know what I can do as I was not aware of this contamination until after my brother’s death that 3M is most likely responsible for, and my mother’s illnesses. I reside in Illinois and my mother doe also as she lives with me; however, she ingested that water on a daily basis for many years. My mother’s name is Dorothy Jean Pruett and she goes by Jean or Jeannie and her DOB is 03/30/1947 if you need to check onto her address or employment where the water contamination occurred, and my only siblingonnie Dickson Jr.’s DOB was 01/02/1967 if you need to check on his address and employment of the same.
By tye way, my name is Michelle Dunmyer and I live in Illinois. Please let me know if you can assist as I am definitely seeking counsel.
Thank you,
Michelle Dunmyer
