PFAS: Is the Tap Water Safe to Drink?
Exposure to PFAS can occur more commonly for workers in manufacturing, service
sectors, and the fire service industry. However, these chemicals can also be found in tap
water throughout communities in Alabama and around the country.
What are PFAS?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, referred to as PFAS, are manufactured chemicals
used in products and industries around the world. They are widely used, and their
components take a long time to break down. PFAS can be found in the soil, air, and
water, and low levels are also sometimes present in food products and within people’s
bloodstream.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that scientific studies discovered
a link between PFAS exposure and harmful health effects. Still, the high number of types
and uses of these chemicals makes it difficult to determine the extent and total impact.
PFAS and Cancer
While research is still ongoing, the EPA suggests that increased levels of some PFAS
chemicals can cause the following:
• Decreased fertility
• Developmental delays in children
• Reduced immune response
• Hormonal interference
Further, high levels of PFAS in your drinking water could lead to certain types of cancer.
The list of associated cancers is extensive and includes kidney, testicular, liver, stomach,
bladder, colorectal, esophagus, and prostate cancer.
Cancer and Class Action Settlements
The possibility of PFAS causing cancer is a significant health risk considering its
widespread use. There have been recent lawsuits around the country and locally due to
this issue. The Decatur water contamination and subsequent 3M lawsuit is one such
example. If PFAS chemicals have contaminated your water source in Alabama and you
suspect this has led to your health problems, a class action lawsuit may be an option.
Class action lawsuits involve an individual or a small group of people who file a lawsuit
that is representative of many people. Essentially, this process allows people who have
suffered similar injuries caused by the same defendant to sue for damages without each
individual needing to be directly involved in the legal process.
A solid case is needed when filing a claim like PFAS causing cancer due to contaminated
drinking water. The personal injury lawyer handling the case must show that:
• PFAS exposure caused the plaintiffs to develop cancer
• The defendant was the source of the PFAS
• The defendant was aware of the potential for dangerous health effects
Documentation such as medical bills, expert testimony, proof of impairment, and
evidence that the company was aware of the issue can all be helpful in a class action
lawsuit.
