The Increase in Traffic Deaths Since COVID-19
The recent rise in dangerous driving is alarming. Road rage, alcohol use, and cell phone use while driving are all becoming more common in the United States, according to the Pew Research Center. Why is this happening? Most Americans believe that the pandemic is a direct cause of this increase in reckless driving.
The Pandemic’s Role in Reckless Driving
According to Demography Unplugged, reckless drivers had the advantage of “minimal police enforcement” during COVID-19. Additionally, fewer people on the road meant more room for error. Now that the country has opened back up, these drivers have become accustomed to these conditions. However, the number of people on the roads has risen tremendously.
Huntsville’s Growing Traffic Challenges
Here in Huntsville, the 5-o’clock traffic heading to more rural areas is astounding. The average American commuter has risen nearly 33% since 2020. We can contribute to this to the rise in hybrid work and the high cost of living (The Wall Street Journal). Similarly, roads have become increasingly full no matter the time of day, since many people work from home post-pandemic. Just think back to pre-COVID times: there was a morning rush, lunch rush, and 5-o’clock rush. Nowadays, you can be on the road at 2 PM on a Tuesday and still encounter traffic.
The Inverse Relationship Between Citations and Fatalities
Reckless driving and traffic deaths have a direct relationship. What is interesting is the decline in traffic citations, as well as the rise in fatal vehicle accidents. This inverse relationship makes sense when we refer to the lack of police enforcement. Fewer police staff means less surveillance. Police are then present when there is a fatality or severe wreck.
The Importance of Safe Driving Practices
Applying safe driving practices and knowing how to keep a safe distance from other vehicles is crucial. Of course, accidents happen. But increased awareness and adherence to traffic laws can significantly reduce their frequency and severity.
